Fishing is a bit slow this week but still pretty good. There are big schools of Bluefish and chub mackerel in the surf and there are good numbers of Fluke and Bonito in the bay. Anglers are targeting both live bait and plugs for this species. Bass are also hitting well from boats and on the beach, with the best size being found in the 60 ft. area where the Bunker is swimming. Crab fishing is picking up as well, with plenty of puffer and blowfish in the bay.
The area between the inlets has been active with a fleet of private and for-hire boats catching fish. These boats are likely being watched by the U.S. Coast Guard for any infractions of the three-mile line limit. The fish that were caught by Grumpy’s Tackle weighed more than 16 pounds and were 37 inches long. Most of them came on artificial lures, including poppers, swim shads and metal lip swimmers.
Big bass are still hanging around in the pockets, and weakfish are also being plucked out of the suds. One big tog weighing 6.25 pounds was checked in from the North Jetty. Those who use treble hooks are advised to be careful not to go overboard, because Fish and Wildlife is issuing tickets for using these lures on the jetty.
While surf conditions have been slow, surfcasters still have a great chance at catching a fluke. A recent report from Grumpy’s Tackle shows some good fluke action on S&S bucktails tied to a Gulp teaser rig. The surf is also full of life with school stripers. One angler, Frank Manzi, weighed a 4.65-pound fluke early and returned later to land six bass in the surf, including a few over 24 inches.

Raritan Bay
The striper bite continues to be strong in Raritan Bay, where anglers are catching keepers on clams and stretch lures. They are also finding bass on bobbers and worms. In addition, the blackfish bite is continuing at the Oceanic Bridge.
Bass, fluke, and stripers are good targets if the weather cooperates. The striper bite is still hot, but action has also been good in the rivers and on local beaches. While clams and soft plastics are best for beach fishing, jig heads and Gulp will work well for fluking.
Crab fishing has improved as well. The bay is also picking up on Spot and Eels. The night bite is great for Bass, but daytime fishing is also working for anglers. Bluefish have been hitting well on day and night baits. Fluking has been biting well off the beach and is good for limit catching. There are also some decent sized bass in the bay. Crab fishing has also been good, and full size Menhaden have been working well.
